A very enjoyable short break - Rating 5/5

We have just had a 3 night break at The Church Inn having booked on their 3 for 2 rate. We had eaten some time ago their and enjoyed the food but decided to stay as we could visit Chatsworth. Our room was perfect with a wardrobe each and plug points in handy areas (that alone was brilliant). The bed was comfortable and such peace with no road noise. We ate all 3 nights at the Inn and the food was plentiful and delicious and with a roaring log burner and great friendly staff it made for 3 lovely evenings. It is a rare thing to stay at an establishment and be made to feel so welcome and almost part of the community. We loved that. The breakfasts were delicious too and our thanks to Justin and Julie and their staff who made our break fantastic. We will be back.

Fishing trip - Rating 5/5

We were fishing the local Derbyshire rivers and the Church Inn made an ideal base. It is a lovely old country pub, with comfortable, clean rooms (en suite with a decent shower), and a good pub menu with some old favourites but also a bit more adventurous than most. The beer is first class and there was an unexpected Barolo on the (otherwise standard) wine list, which was excellent and unusually reasonably priced. The pub offers good value and a friendly, welcoming stay - i recommend it.

Response

Thank you for your comments, I\'m glad we were a good base for you whilst exploring the rivers in the area. We look forward to seeing you again.

A comfortable stay - Rating 5/5

My wife and I stayed for two nights, and had an evening meal on the first of those nights. The meal was good, the room not over-large but very comfortable - especially the bed. Breakfast was from 8.00 to 9.00 and was quite a feast. My wife felt that the Derbyshire oatcake should be cooked in a little less fat. we were given a warm welcome, and the photos, artwork and poetry around the walls added interest - particularly the story of Chelmorton Docks - sadly no longer to be seen.

Just returned from three nights at this lovely pub, rooms are in the annex at the back they are very clean comfortable and warm a bonus after walking this time of year. The shower is enormous and the bathroom is fully tiled. Plenty of choice at breakfast we ate here every night and the food is lovely and well priced but the alcohol is a little pricey . Tv in rooms and free wi if which works . The only thing missing is a little music in the bar especially when it went quiet on an evening . Hopefully we will return well placed for the surrounding area .

No need to pray for a friendly stay at the Church Inn - Rating 5/5

A really friendly pub that serves great food. The accommodation is separate to the pub so very quiet (not that the pub itself is noisy). Plenty of heat and hot water in the room and a lovely, included, breakfast. The bedroom and en-suite can be best described as bijou so a place to sleep rather than chill - so encourages visitors to spend more time in the bar ;-)

Response

Thank you for your comments, glad to hear you enjoyed your stay. The rooms are limited for space but nothing beats sitting in front of the log fire in the bar during this time of year! Hope to see you again.

Weekend Away - Rating 5/5

Stayed at The Church Inn for two nights. We enjoyed a filling lunch of sausage and black pudding bap and pork bap on the Friday, leaving not alot of room for dinner but somehow we managed. The portions are generous which would be welcome if you have spent the day walking. We visited Bakewell on Saturday and stocked up on Bakewell Pudding. Sadly we departed on Sunday, we would certainly have liked to stay for longer. The landlords are very welcoming and the Inn has a lovely atmosphere. Highly recommend .

Weekend escape - Rating 5/5

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay at The Church Inn. The room was small but very clean and comfortable with everything needed for a short stay. This is a great traditional pub serving excellent food in an attractive village with picturesque views. We walked from the Inn up the bridal path in search of the 5 chambered tomb. Fantastic. Friends joined us for Sunday lunch which everyone enjoyed. Our vegetarian needs were more than adequately provided for with several choices rather than the usual option. Well done and top marks for that. We were made to feel very welcome and were well looked after. Thank you. Diana and Tim

So welcoming, a fantastic and enjoyable stay - Rating 5/5

We first visited The Church Inn, Chelmorton in 1989, it was a lovely traditional public house then, with friendly staff, good beers and food... today it is just the same. Greeted on arrival by a lovely friendly young lady who made us feel very welcome and showed us to our room. Once settled, we returned for a drink in the cosy bar, warmed by a log burning stove. The village residents were friendly and talkative and we spent a pleasant time chatting. First-rate rooms, spotlessly clean and in good state of repair. It had everything and more for an overnight or longer stay... even a sewing kit and shoe cleaner. It was very tempting to stay an extra night. That evening the restaurant was very busy as was the bar area. Earlier we had asked if we needed to book a table but were told it wouldn\'t be necessary due it it being a weekday. It was a pleasant surprise to find that the young lady who checked us in had reserved a table for us once she realised the restaurant was getting full. Nice touch which we appreciated very much. The meal in the pub was superb, it was well cooked and presented. Delicious, wholesome pub food and very good menu for carnivores and vegetarians alike. There are also extensive specials and desserts boards. Breakfast was also excellent and served in a lovely separate dining room. Full English or other choices for less hearty eaters. We had the full English breakfast, well it was my birthday, so had to be done. Again well cooked, tasty and well presented. The Church Inn is a lovely place to stay, it fully deserves the outstanding reviews it receives. Large car park at the rear of the public house for people staying in the B&B accommodation. Highly recommend The Church Inn and we will definitely return and not leave it so long next time. Thank you for making us so welcome and for a fantastic stay.

A Lovely Weekend in the Peak District - Rating 5/5

Our choice of hostelry was based on the great reviews on Tripadvisor and we weren't disappointed! Quintessential English country pub with rooms, located in some the most stunning countryside in England, perfect for exploring the nearby towns of Bakewell and Buxton. The rooms are well appointed, comfy beds, good quality linens, plenty of storage space and good toiletries in bathroom. We booked a double and a twin (for our two 14 yr old boys). Breakfast was as good as you will get in a 5* hotel; cereals, juice, fruit, yoghurt and choice of full English or scrambled eggs and smoked salmon. Enough to keep you going until it's time for dinner, and boy, was the dinner great! We can recommend, black pudding fritters or whitebate for starter, followed by pork fillet stuffed with black pudding and smothered in whole grain mustard sauce or rabbit pie with suet crust or braised lamb with minty dumplings. Deserts are great and drinks very reasonably priced. A three course dinner with wine will cost no more than £25pp...and you'd pay double in the South! We were made to feel like regulars by Justin and his team of great staff. We highly recommend and will return!

Lovely pub! - Rating 4/5

Warm welcome, lovely room and delicious food. We were too full from the filling evening meal to eat breakfast, but those served to other guests looked very tasty. The pub itself was charming and lively - mainly due to the dart & domino competition, but despite being busy the service didn't suffer. We would stay again and will tell others.

Friendly, clean and beautiful location. - Rating 4/5

We had a great stay at the Inn, very friendly and helpfull owners, very clean place and the location is stunning. We loved the little church opposite the inn and all the beautiful stone walls. The food was nice and we were happy with the fresh vegetables; breakfast more than you can wish for and served piping hot. A few ideas maybe: we booked the twin room which is a long narrow room and did not have space to leave the luggage. The shower room is large enough though but not practical. The bathroom could do with a few hooks and something to put a toilet bag on. Now we had to place everything we needed on the floor while having a shower. Luckely the floor was spotless! :) No Vodafone signal, but owners again very helpful and offered to use their phone! Very kind, thank you!We would certainly return!

Absolution at The Church - Rating 4/5

Great, great place in a great area. The hosts and staff are very accommodating, friendly and helpful. The beer and food in the Inn are excellent with sausages coming from local sources. I highly recommend the beef in Guinness. The only problem for the business traveller is that the rooms are a bit small and you may have to do your work on the bed. However, for everyone else, 5 stars. You can't beat getting a Pint of Absolution at The Church after a day of sinning.

Five star service! - Rating 5/5

We stopped overnight whilst walking the Limestone Way and couldn't fault the Church Inn's genuine welcome, immaculate accommodation, excellent food or inclusive pub ambiance - they even threw in entertainment in the form of a quiz and bingo draw after our meal. We lost both - deservedly with the answers we gave! But the truly 5 star service came after we left. I won the Plonker of the Week Award when it started to rain after we'd hiked to the next village and I realised I'd left my raincoat behind in the pub. I phoned and my offer to pay for a cab was rejected by the landlord who jumped into his car and drove it over himself to a very grateful hiker. I had to force him to take a tenner for his troubles/petrol. Now that's real Derbyshire helpfulness!

Response

Thank you for taking the time to review The Church Inn. Believe you me the leaving your coat behind thing happens a lot so either we get a lot of plonkers or its just easily done. Either way we were happy to help and should you be walking this way again we would love to welcome you back.

After a long day walking we were given a warm welcome. The room although quite small had everything we needed. The facilities were clean but the decor was a bit 'tired'. The food in the evening had a good choice & was freshly cooked. Book a table if you are staying at the weekend to avoid having to wait as it was busy. Breakfast was also good & set us up for our next days walk. Overall it is a good place to stay & we would go back again.

A Little Gem - Rating 5/5

We wanted a base for walking in the Peak District and generally exploring the area. The Church Inn was perfect! We were found a table in the busy restaurant and served some really tasty home made food. Not fine dining, but that wasn't what we wanted. The staff were lovely and attentive and obviously cared. The bed was perhaps on the hard side and breakfast may be deemed by some to be early (between 8 and 9), but again it was perfect for us as we had planned to explore the area and needed an early start. We had a lovely stay and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone who wants to visit the area. We'll be coming back

Great Stay - Rating 4/5

Not really knowing the Peak District very well it was difficult to decide where to stay and the previous reviews certainly swayed our decision. We were not disappointed and found the rooms to be very comfortable (not massive but big enough)and the bonus was having the pub onsite. The accommodation is self contained and separate from the pub so there is little or no noise and all the benefits of good beer and excellent food. We received a warm welcome and would recommend the Church Inn to anyone visiting the Peak District.

Overnight stay - Rating 4/5

We had a one night stop over on our way to Birmingham International. We enjoyed good wholesome food for dinner in the warm friendly pub that evening. The room was well appointed although a little small, this would not detract from a further stay next time we are in the area.

We and our two Danish friends thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The situation was stunning. The rooms were very good and very comfortable. The evening meal in the pub was excellent. The staff were helpful and friendly. The breakfast could have been better.

Response

Thank you for your review. We are glad you enjoyed your stay and note your comments. We are sorry you were disappointed with your breakfast. We do however provide a large selection of choices including porridge, cereal, yoghurts, fresh fruit, juices and toast together with tea and coffee and various cooked options including full english and scrambled eggs with smoked salmon. As we only serve breakfast for a up to 8 people we do have to limit the choice and consider we do offer a good selection. Look forward to welcoming you back.

very welcoming establishment, food and ale of a superior standard. If you are looking for a bit of r&r in the country with little more than birdsong to disturb you a good place to go. Rooms, some may consider to be small but the beds were comfy & amenities sufficient. Well worth a visit.

Response

Thank you for your review. We do try to make it as relaxing as possible and with the glorious weather there is nothing better than to take advantage of the beer garden after a long walk.

Lovely break - Rating 5/5

This was the perfect place for us to stay for a short two day visit to the Dales. The accommodation was very comfortable and well maintained, the food was great and there was a good selection of real ales for the beer enthusiast. There was a great atmosphere in the Inn on both evenings. We decided to take a rest from driving as there are lovely walks on the doorstep and we walked to Bakewell leaving the car in the safety of the car park at the Inn. We'd like to thank the staff who were very helpful and friendly and made every effort to please. We'll be back to explore Buxton in the not too distant future.

Excellent stay - Rating 5/5

My boyfriend and I stayed for just one night in The Church Inn. It was an extremely pleasant experience. From the outset, the website was easy to use and well laid out and there were no problems with the payment. The owners were very relaxed and friendly, nothing was rushed or a problem. The rooms were small but that’s in keeping with the authentic building. Everything in the room was clean and functional and it was really peaceful. In the restaurant/bar, everything was excellent; we felt like we were experiencing a proper local scene but accommodated well as tourists. Breakfast was super…the big plus for us was getting a loan of a small ordanance survey map and some good advice on local hiking trails…..beautiful trails everywhere right on the doorstep. So, all in all I’d totally recommend this accommodation to anyone.

Happy Days - Rating 5/5

I object that my only possible option under 'travelling as' is 'mature couple' - I suggest you have couple as an option. The Church Inn is our favourite pub in the UK. The comfort level is good value for money, the food is excellent wholesome fare, there are always a good range of beers, the hosts (for they are more than staff) are attentive, friendly and entertaining, and the location is fantastic, full of history and scenic beauty. Iain and Bonny

Response

Apologies Iain; we would never class you as a mature couple. Thank you for you kind review. It was a pleasure as always to have you staying here with us. Hope to see you very soon, Regards, The Church Inn

Used as a base for walking in the Peak district and Derbyshire dales. Good location and easy to find, access to and from surrounding beauty spots, towns and villages very good, lots to do within a 15 mile radius. Room very good and clean etc, meals including breakfast excellent, not forgetting the good ales in a pub that caters for both drinkers and diners alike. Mine hosts were very good, we will definitely use for future walking weekends.

Perfect Break - Rating 5/5

What can I say? Warm welcome, lovely warm room on a freezing night. Cosy bar and good food. What more could you ask for? Well, a pub which is also the hub of the village with a Quiz Night (fiendishly hard - the winner only scored 20/30) and bingo. I realise that this might not be to everybody's taste, but it brought the community in, and a really friendly bunch too. Justin's offers are too good to miss, and I understant he also has one running in the summer. What are you waiting for? Get in touch and find out!

Response

This is our third stay which should speak volumes and will not be our last. Our intention was to be busy bees! but the minute we walked in we just chilled. All the locals gather here and in no time your chatting away like buddies. The home cooked meals are both wonderful and different and it is all so easy in a blink its just added to your bill no fuss at all. The rooms are comfortable and cosy and with suprisingly copise amounts of coffee tea etc rare these days. really lovely stay just what the doctor ordered.

Overnight stays - Rating 5/5

We stayed overnight twice in August at the Church Inn. We were personally taken to our rooms and shown around. The rooms were comfortable, clean and quietly situated. They were small but very well appointed and decorated. The bathrooms worked well, and we appreciated the booklets about the history of the village. Breakfast was individually cooked to our requirements in a special breakfast room, and we ate very good dinners in the main pub area each evening. We would certainly recommend The Church Inn to others.
